Female Box LAX has
evolved over the years to be the perfect
“Spring Season” augment for athletes
participating in many other sports. It
requires,
“speed-quickness-endurance-strength-teamwork-toughness”
and most importantly tremendous “eye-hand”
coordination to be able to move at speed
with pressure. The plays utilized both
offensively and defensively are very similar
to basketball.
The key difference as
compared to the “boys” game is the strict
enforcement of the “place and push” checking
rule. The rule states that the stick
cannot be placed on the opposing player with
any “force”, once placed you can push/steer.
Most of the Canadian
girls playing the “Women’s” version of Field
LAX are also Box LAX players. This
gives our girls an advantage of learning a
much different game with many transferrable
skills. Although the Field game is
completely different than Box, many of the
skills required in Box LAX allow our players
to be very sought after for United States
Scholarship opportunities. The Field
LAX game is a “NO HITTING” game that focuses
on “TEAM” play and requires all the skills
of the Box game. Girls Field LAX is
growing rapidly in Western Canada, catching
up with the East. This year was the
first year the U19 Canadian National Team
came looking for Western players and
selected 10 from Alberta and BC. Two
of those players came from last year’s
Semiahmoo Midget box team.
Semiahmoo had one
girl’s team last year entered at the Midget
age group. In spite of having several
underage girls and a number of first year
players, the team managed to qualify for
provincials and was the only team to defeat
the eventual Gold Medal winners in the round
robin. With a core group of very
skilled players and new players that learned
very quickly, the team was feared by even
most established teams from New West and
Coquitlam. With just one more goal in
the game against the Gold Medal winners the
team would have gone to the gold medal
round. Many of the players from this
team now play together in field LAX.
