Alex Benson Memorial Bursary

2011 Winners

For the first time the Alex Benson memorial award was shared by two very deserving graduating players from our association.  SMLA President, Trevor Young (left), presents the award to Ray Bell (center) and Connor Matushewski [represented by his father, Bev (right)] who share the Alex Benson memorial award for 2011.  Congratulations to our winners!

Policy

1.

Each year, the SMLA makes provision for a bursary to a deserving student.  This program was developed to recognize outstanding contributions to lacrosse, and to encourage and assist in the pursuit and attainment of higher education in memory of Alex Benson.  Alex, a Grade 12 student at Elgin Park Secondary and long time Semiahmoo/ White Rock lacrosse player passed away as a result of a tragic accident on Friday April 23, 2004.  Alex always played at 100% with a big heart and was known for welcoming others throughout his life. Alex’s dad, Al Benson, a former player with the New Westminster Salmonbellies, has also devoted hundreds of hours of coaching to Semiahmoo/White Rock lacrosse.

2.

The bursary is awarded to individuals, current and past, who have participated  in any of the following categories:

a)

b)

c)

Players,
Referees,
Coaches/Team Management/Volunteers

3.

The SMLA Executive administers the bursary.  The person(s) selected must have shown a high standard of commitment in his/her particular area of participation; possess strong teamwork skills; have demonstrated good character and sportsmanship, and a sense of citizenship.

4.

Bursary award winners must attend a Canadian post-secondary education institution within 12 months of being awarded the bursary or the financial award will be retained in the SMLA program for another recipient in a future year.

5.

Once the recipient of the bursary has been selected, the bursary may not be transferred without the approval of the SMLA Executive.  The bursary may not necessarily be awarded in any fiscal period.

Application

a)

Each year, the SMLA Director of Communications will ensure the applications are available for the Grade 12 former SMLA players prior to the application deadline.

b)

Those wishing to apply for a bursary in any category will do so using the approved Alex Benson Memorial Bursary Application Form (click on the link to download the PDF form that can be filled-in electronically and printed off).  The form and accompanying documentation must be mailed to the SMLA at the address and by the deadline given on the application form.  Late applications will not be accepted.

c)
